Buyers Guide - How to choose a sleeping bag

A good night’s sleep is key to enjoying your time in the hills and vital for physical and mental recovery. Keeping toasty while you sleep is important because your body will naturally drop in temperature during deep rest. There are a multitude of sleeping bags available out there covering a vast price range but if you choose wisely, maintain your bag and store it correctly it could very well keep you snoozing happily for 20+ years.

Choosing the right sleeping bag for you involves asking some key questions included below. To help you understand why they are important simply click through to our full buyers guide to read about the incredible technologies, science, testing and the design involved in getting you a good nights sleep....

- Synthetic or down?

- Men’s or women’s?
- What is a "season" and why do the prices vary so much?
- How do I make sense of comfort ratings?
- Why should a bag “fit” me?
- So do I get what I pay for?
- I brought a “warm” bag but I’m still cold at night.
- What about the environment?

Top tips to make the right choice:

If you can visit the shop to look at them in person this is ideal as not only does it allow you to place bags side by side to instantly see the difference in cut and loft but it also gives you the opportunity to try the bags on. Just like clothing, they are all cut differently and often come in length options so that you can get exactly the right fit for you. These days, however, travelling long distances and meeting face to face may not be quite so straightforward so we are more than happy to talk with you over the phone to discuss which sleeping bag may work best for you. We are all active users of the equipment we sell and we have all had our fair share of miserable nights, that’s why we are all happy to share our knowledge - so that you don’t have to!

  • Rab Ascent 1100 Sleeping Bag in Pine review by Globetrotter , on 16/10/2022

Positives: I like the Rab Ascent 1100 -25C sleeping bag. The green colour blends better for outdoor use (although I dont like the bright red interior...I wish that Rab would at least provide a green or dark lining to match the exterior, especially for when you are in stealth mode). The wide fit provides great sleeping comfort. Generally too warm to use hood above minus 2C even when naked, (I sleep with head and arms outside bag during milder nights) and it is more comfortable when the mercury level really begins to slide well beyond the frost and snow❄️zones below 0C to minus -25C. A very toasty bag! If you are sleeping at zero C or above, youll definitely need to use the two-way zip to vent the torso or footbox. All in all, a great down bag for winter ❄️ use and at a superb price! Negatives: The drawcords on the hood and neck baffles are far too long, and the placement of the toggles means that you can easily end up laying on them during sleep. Also if fully tightened, they can tangle or end up almost strangling around your neck if you roll during sleep. The zip occasionally snags (although the 2022 model has an updated zip guide (similar to the latest Mammut bags). Some stitching near neck baffle came undone, which I had prepared by a professional seamstress. The one major problem Ive discovered with the Rab Ascent 1100 is fine down and feather shedding. It was terrible for a few months after purchasing new, settled down a bit after 6-months, still shed a year later, and continues to shed after longterm daily use. The shedding is not from only one place, but from ALL areas of stitching of hood, main body and toe-box, inside and out. Also regularly through the actual Pertex Quantum material where there is no stitching. That it is 🦆 duck down (which is smaller than goose down) heightens the problem, but I still think that a tighter weave material would alleviate so much down sheding (for example, my Mountain Equipment expedition goose down pants have not shed any down since new). I also think that the cotton thread used in the stitching needs to be more robust, because it is showing fine fraying in all sections of the bag. But when all is said and done, the main criteria of this sleeping bag is to provide comfort and warmth to sleep well during extreme cold temperatures 🌡️....and this it certainly provides! ☺️
