Mountain Equipment Aurora V Sleeping Bag - Long Left Zip

Season:EOL

Brand:Mountain Equipment

Code:80002109

The Mountain Equipment Aurora V has been developed for use in cold and damp conditions with a Good Nights Sleep Guaranteed of -20°C.

Durable materials combined with high lofting and very compressible synthetic insulation ensure this bag will perform faultlessly in harsh conditions. At camp the bag will quickly loft creating a warm environment protected by an integrated collar, a full zip baffle and a Lode Lock closure preventing the bag from accidentally opening whilst your sleeping. The bag features an Expedition fit with an EXL system this gives you extra space should you need to keep heavy items of clothing on to sleep in and has an improved loft along with providing thermal efficiency.

The Aurora range has been designed to excel in cold damp conditions where down insulation may struggle. The Polarloft insulation provides the ultimate synthetic sleeping bag insulation, this is due to using two types of synthetic fill - continuous and mixed filament. These fills combined maximise thermal retention, durability and loft. They can withstand prolonged use and repeated compression. The Drilite Loft 20D outer fabric offers an impressive 1500mm hydrostatic head making the outer highly water resistant as well as totally windproof. Keystone shingle and layered construction offers the greatest warmth for the minimum of weight combined with bonded seams on the underside of the bag, protecting the insulation from any water ingress.

Buyers Guide - How to choose a sleeping bag

A good night’s sleep is key to enjoying your time in the hills and vital for physical and mental recovery. Keeping toasty while you sleep is important because your body will naturally drop in temperature during deep rest. There are a multitude of sleeping bags available out there covering a vast price range but if you choose wisely, maintain your bag and store it correctly it could very well keep you snoozing happily for 20+ years.

Choosing the right sleeping bag for you involves asking some key questions included below. To help you understand why they are important simply click through to our full buyers guide to read about the incredible technologies, science, testing and the design involved in getting you a good nights sleep....

- Synthetic or down?

- Men’s or women’s?
- What is a "season" and why do the prices vary so much?
- How do I make sense of comfort ratings?
- Why should a bag “fit” me?
- So do I get what I pay for?
- I brought a “warm” bag but I’m still cold at night.
- What about the environment?

Top tips to make the right choice:

If you can visit the shop to look at them in person this is ideal as not only does it allow you to place bags side by side to instantly see the difference in cut and loft but it also gives you the opportunity to try the bags on. Just like clothing, they are all cut differently and often come in length options so that you can get exactly the right fit for you. These days, however, travelling long distances and meeting face to face may not be quite so straightforward so we are more than happy to talk with you over the phone to discuss which sleeping bag may work best for you. We are all active users of the equipment we sell and we have all had our fair share of miserable nights, that’s why we are all happy to share our knowledge - so that you don’t have to!

  • Mountain Equipment Aurora V Sleeping Bag - Long Left Zip review by Patrick Cadell, on 23/01/2022

I bought the Mountain Equipment Aurora V for a 3 day snow caving and bivvying trip in the Eastern Cairngorms in mid January (one night in a snow cave and two nights in bivvy bags). I thought it was excellent, it has good wind and damp protection when used inside a bivvy bag and kept me very warm despite the damp and cold in the show cave and bivvys. It is a huge improvement on my old down sleeping bag which got progressively damper and less insulating in these conditions. It is very well designed for Scottish winter expeditions. The only drawback versus a down bag is that it it somewhat bulkier and heavier. But this is outweighed in my view by the need to have a reliably warm when damp sleeping bag for comfort and safety in Scottish winter conditions.
