Buyers Guide - How to choose a sleeping bag

A good night’s sleep is key to enjoying your time in the hills and vital for physical and mental recovery. Keeping toasty while you sleep is important because your body will naturally drop in temperature during deep rest. There are a multitude of sleeping bags available out there covering a vast price range but if you choose wisely, maintain your bag and store it correctly it could very well keep you snoozing happily for 20+ years.

Choosing the right sleeping bag for you involves asking some key questions included below. To help you understand why they are important simply click through to our full buyers guide to read about the incredible technologies, science, testing and the design involved in getting you a good nights sleep....

- Synthetic or down?

- Men’s or women’s?
- What is a "season" and why do the prices vary so much?
- How do I make sense of comfort ratings?
- Why should a bag “fit” me?
- So do I get what I pay for?
- I brought a “warm” bag but I’m still cold at night.
- What about the environment?

Top tips to make the right choice:

If you can visit the shop to look at them in person this is ideal as not only does it allow you to place bags side by side to instantly see the difference in cut and loft but it also gives you the opportunity to try the bags on. Just like clothing, they are all cut differently and often come in length options so that you can get exactly the right fit for you. These days, however, travelling long distances and meeting face to face may not be quite so straightforward so we are more than happy to talk with you over the phone to discuss which sleeping bag may work best for you. We are all active users of the equipment we sell and we have all had our fair share of miserable nights, that’s why we are all happy to share our knowledge - so that you don’t have to!

We bought this to use inside our vehicle for overland travels. A top quality item from RAB and very warm. The all round zip makes the bag very versatile and would be equally at home in a tent or a hammock. The extra space is great for those who don’t enjoy being constrained by a mummy shape.

I am 62, broad in the beam, and have arthritic shoulders that made wriggling into my old mummy type sleeping bag uncomfortable. This Outpost 700 bag is warm, comfortable, and of sufficiently ample proportions to be an ideal buy. It may not pack down to the smallest size but is still good, and has the advantage of being able to be unzipped into a double duvet sized eiderdown.

A quality quilt: it’s a Rab product! Very warm. Very roomy. Much more comfortable than a restrictive sleeping bag. Looking forward to using it in the winter months.

I always dread going camping when I have a suffocating mummy type sleeping bag. With this sleeping bag it’s no longer an issue and I finally have enough room for my legs to spread out. These are also great if you camp with a partner, for you can get a right zip bag and left zip bag and then zip them together to form one massive sleeping bag! I originally bought the Outpost 300, thinking more of weight when hiking and also that the 700 might be too hot in warmer weather. But they offered very little warmth and was almost no point even having them with such little insulation. We took the 700’s to the Lake District, with a temperature low of around 12 Celsius, and they were perfect. If it’s hotter than this than you can always just zip out the bottom, which I always do anyway because I get hot feet, or the sides and use it more like a quilt. And I imagine these would still be comfortable fully zipped up to around 0 Celsius. We dont really have much interest camping below freezing, but if thats your thing, then maybe a warmer sleeping bag is needed. These also compact down quite small for their size to warmth ratio, being that they are down. However, and the reason I had to take off one star, is that the compression sacks Rab give you are terrible. Just a bad design that does not allow you to fully compress these sleeping bags down. So we had to buy some Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil eVent compression sacks to get the bags compact enough to fit properly in our rucksack. Having to pay an extra £60 for these when these sleeping bags were already very expensive, was not a pleasing experience. Rab do though give you a very nice storage bag for the sleeping bags, for you shouldn’t store down in a compressed state. Also to add, we really love the colour :-) And for you tall people out there, I’m almost 6 ft 4 inches and these were fine for me, which is often not the case with other sleeping bags.
