The easiest way to tell if a jacket is waterproof is to look inside - if you can see lines of taping on the back of the seams, like on a Gore-Tex jacket, then it is 100% waterproof.

In short: it depends on where you’re going!

For most UK walks and camps, quality hiking clothing will be enough: waterproofs, wicking baselayers and sturdy quick-drying trousers.

But if you’re heading to high-altitude or extreme environments (e.g. Scottish winter climbs, Alpine routes, or expeditions abroad), you’ll need specialist expedition clothing. This includes down-insulated layers and technical expedition-grade shells.
