Sunglasses: A Buyer’s Guide

Choosing the right sunglasses for outdoor activities is about much more than style. When you’re climbing, hiking, mountaineering, skiing or trail running, your eyes can be exposed to intense sunlight, glare, wind and debris. The right pair of sunglasses can provide essential protection while improving comfort and visibility in changing conditions.

Julbo has a long history of producing technical eyewear for mountain environments, with its range including specialist glacier sunglasses, sports sunglasses and everyday outdoor models. So, how do you choose the right pair?

Why is eye protection important outdoors?

UV exposure can be particularly intense at altitude, while snow, water and pale rock can reflect sunlight and increase glare. Sunglasses should provide protection from UVA and UVB radiation as well as reducing the amount of visible light reaching your eyes.

For mountain activities, look for sunglasses that provide a secure fit, good coverage and lenses appropriate for the conditions.

What are Julbo REACTIV lenses?

One of Julbo's key technologies is REACTIV photochromic lenses. These lenses automatically adjust their tint according to the available light, becoming darker in brighter conditions and lighter as the light fades. This makes them particularly useful when you're moving between different environments or experiencing rapidly changing weather.

Different REACTIV lenses are designed for different activities and light conditions. For example, some current Julbo models use REACTIV 1-3 lenses for activities such as trail running and cycling, while REACTIV 2-4 options are designed for mountain sports and stronger light.

If you don't want to carry multiple pairs of sunglasses for changing conditions, REACTIV technology can be a particularly versatile choice.

What are Julbo SPECTRON lenses?

SPECTRON lenses are designed to provide fixed levels of protection, with different categories available for different light conditions.

For example, a Category 3 SPECTRON lens is designed for strong light and typically allows around 8–18% of visible light through. Category 4 lenses are considerably darker and are intended for exceptionally bright conditions. Julbo's current Category 4 models can have a visible light transmission of around 5%.

Category 4 sunglasses are particularly useful for high-altitude environments, glaciers and areas with intense reflected sunlight. However, they are not suitable for driving because the very dark lenses transmit too little light.

What are glacier sunglasses?

If you're heading into high mountains, specialist glacier sunglasses offer additional protection compared with conventional sunglasses.

Glacier glasses typically combine dark, high-protection lenses with increased coverage around the sides of the eyes. This helps reduce the amount of intense reflected light reaching your eyes from snow and ice, while also providing protection from wind and cold.

Julbo's EXPLORER 2.0, for example, is designed specifically for high-mountain use and features large coverage, removable side shields and adjustable temples.

For mountaineering, ski touring and alpine climbing, this additional coverage can be an important consideration.

Which Julbo sunglasses should I choose?

Think about where and how you will use your sunglasses.

For mountaineering and alpine climbing: Look for maximum coverage, a secure fit and high-protection lenses. Models with side shields or removable protective components can be particularly useful.

For hiking and general mountain use: A versatile Category 3 lens or photochromic REACTIV lens can work well across a range of conditions.

For trail running and cycling: Prioritise a lightweight frame, secure grip and a wide field of vision. Julbo's OUTLINE REACTIV, for example, is designed for trail running and cycling and weighs just 26g.

For changing light: REACTIV photochromic lenses are worth considering because they automatically adapt as light levels change.

How important is the fit?

Even the best technical sunglasses won't perform properly if they don't fit correctly.

Your sunglasses should sit securely without creating uncomfortable pressure points. They shouldn't slide when you move your head, and your eyelashes shouldn't touch the lenses.

Consider the size of your face and look for adjustable features where available. Current Julbo models include technologies such as adjustable 3D Fit Nose pieces, CustomFIT temples and Grip Tech materials to improve stability and comfort during activity.

If you're going to wear sunglasses with a climbing, cycling or ski helmet, it's worth checking that the two work comfortably together.

What lens colour should I choose?

Lens colour and lens category are not the same thing. The category determines how much visible light reaches your eyes, while the tint can influence contrast and how your surroundings appear.

Darker grey, brown and green lenses can be comfortable in brighter conditions, while lighter tints can help improve contrast when light levels are lower or conditions are flat.

However, don't choose sunglasses based on lens colour alone. The lens category, technology and intended use are more important considerations.

Julbo sunglasses: what should you look for?

When choosing your next pair of Julbo sunglasses, focus on three key areas: fit, grip and lenses.

Choose a lens category suited to the conditions you'll encounter, consider REACTIV if you regularly experience changing light, and look for a frame that stays securely in place when you're moving.

For serious mountain use, prioritise coverage and protection over fashion. For running, cycling and general outdoor use, a lightweight frame and wide field of vision may be more important.

Finally, look after your sunglasses. Keep them in a protective case when they're not being worn and clean the lenses with a suitable microfibre cloth. A little care can help your Julbo sunglasses last for many adventures.
