    • Montane Sabretooth Jacket Review

      By La Montee on 5
I’ve been long toying with the concept of the softshell having been a fleece stalwart. Having compared a number of those on the market, and the price tags that come with them I plumped for the Montane Sabretooth.
Montane claims that the Sabretooth with it’s Polartec Powershield fabric cuts out 98% of the wind, and it’s noticeably lighter than my fleece tops.
I’ve always tended to be on the warm side when climbing, and whilst I don’t necessarily follow the ‘be bold, go cold’ philosophy I certainly think you should start a walk or climb on the cooler side as you’ll certainly warm up as those muscles get working. The usual baselayer/fleece/hardshell combo has done me well, but as I say I tend to be on the warmer side. What a revelation it was to don the Sabretooth over my baselayer and head off in to the Langdales on a sunny but cool day in March. There was snow over 500m but my temperature was just right and I felt unencumbered by too many layers. The Sabretooth being, to an extent, water repellant meant I didn’t have to put on the waterproofs when it started snowing.
I love this jacket, it feels good, it looks good and it certainly does keep out the wind. Water forms into little droplets on it’s surface, suggesting a good degree of ‘water repellent-ness’ and with the addition of my hard shell waterproof I really can not feel the wind through the layers (in fact other than the howl of the odd gust as we scrambled over Striding Edge on another excursion, it was pretty calm and peaceful under my two hoods).
I compared the Sabretooth against the Mountain Equipment Shield Jacket and the Marmot Kingpin Jacket (both superb jackets). The specs were all much of a muchness (the Sabretooth didn’t have taped zips but then I didn’t really think it needed them, I’ll leave that for the hardshell) but for me the Montane Sabretooth was a better fit at a better price (all 3 jackets were very hard to find in the sizes I wanted).
Trail magazine gave the Montane Sabretooth a Best in Test and Best Value Award in 2011 and I would say these were well earned. I’m certainly going to be checking more of Montane’s gear out in the future. I got my jacket from who let me order the jacket over the telephone and pick up in person (which I think is always a nice touch).
YES La Montee would recommend this item
