The Joe Brown Shops (Est 1966) and The Climbers Shop (Est 1959)

With over 100 years of retail heritage our shops are incredibly proud to offer a huge choice of clothing and equipment for climbers, mountaineers, hillwalkers and trail runners. Our story was begun by pioneers back in the days when hemp ropes were all the rage. Today, our team are equally passionate about sharing their experience of the products we stock so you don’t have to experience the hard lessons they have already learned. Welcome Back!

As our great little town begins to re-open The Climbers Shop is just one of a wealth of small independent businesses ready and eager to welcome you back to Ambleside and the Lake District.

We have worked extremely hard to ensure that we can welcome you back as safely as we can but with the Coronavirus still prevalent in our world for the foreseeable future it is important to state that we are all responsible for helping restrict the spread of Covid-19.

It is for this reason that we ask for your understanding and co-operation as we open for business unusual. It’s going to take a little getting used to but our lovely old shop is sparkling clean and we are all REALLY looking forward to welcoming you back to Ambleside and our fabulous Lakeland crags, lakes and fells.

So here are a few tips to make shopping with us after lockdown a little more straightforward:

1) Check we are open – our new opening times are published on our website and if we have to close at short notice for any reason we will publish the information on the website first. There will also be a sign on the front door.

2) Wash your hands – we know this may be the umpteenth time you have done so but please, we don’t know this and it really is for everyone’s safety. It’s really simple; if you don’t sanitise your hands we can’t let you touch anything in the shop. We have plenty available for you to use throughout the shop.

3) Please don’t come along expecting to browse just yet – we love chatting with you about your adventures but for now we are working to guidance which clearly states how many people (customers and staff) that we can have safely in our shop at any one time. It is for this reason that we ask you to give us a call or e-mail for advice, browse online and pop in when you have a good idea of what you need. We will be more than happy to advise on your final selection. If you’re bored of queuing – why not click and collect?

4) Needing footwear? Then our trained staff are on hand but we are very limited to how many people we can have in our boot room at any given time. If you are travelling into Ambleside especially then you may wish to book an appointment online to guarantee a time slot. Don’t forget to bring your own socks and a face covering should you prefer to wear one. Our staff will be happy to wear theirs and will check with you prior to fitting.

5) Feeling anxious about shopping in a busy environment? We are reserving two days a week for appointment only sales. Simply call or book online to reserve your slot by clicking on “Appointment Service” on our home page.

And remember, Ambleside isn’t just about buying the right outdoor equipment. Your custom is also highly valued among the wealth of small independent businesses that make this special part of the world so unique. So whether you are shopping for kit, for food, drink, gifts or large bottles of sun lotion (hopefully!) please join the queue, have a friendly chat with your fellow waiting customers, sanitise your hands gleefully (again) and buy local. We guarantee that every pound you spend with be very gratefully received.

Thank you for your all of your support and business so far, we really appreciate it and we very much look forward to seeing you soon.

Be Kind.

Paul, Cathy, Gill and The Climbers Shop and Joe Brown staff team.
