The Joe Brown Shops (Est 1966) and The Climbers Shop (Est 1959)

With over 100 years of retail heritage our shops are incredibly proud to offer a huge choice of clothing and equipment for climbers, mountaineers, hillwalkers and trail runners. Our story was begun by pioneers back in the days when hemp ropes were all the rage. Today, our team are equally passionate about sharing their experience of the products we stock so you don’t have to experience the hard lessons they have already learned. After 57 years in business the Climbers Shop have finally decided to expand, with the opening of a second branch. It’s a long way from our roots up in the Lake District, but our second store will be coming to Stony Stratford near Milton Keynes. Open from March 2016, we’ll be bringing a proper technical outdoor shop back to the Home Counties

Known for its’ independent specialist shops and pubs, Stony Stratford offers a unique village feel while still having the super fast transport links of Milton Keynes. You can be transported to our Aladdin’s cave of outdoor treats in just a few minutes from the A5 or M1 and choose from the same massive range of technical climbing, mountaineering, trail running and hill walking kit as we have in our Ambleside store, along with some exciting new ranges ideal for walking the local downs and ridgeways.

The Climbers Shop was the very first outdoor equipment shop to open in Ambleside way back in 1959 when the founder Frank Davis sold gear to fund his climbing and skiing expeditions. Now, as well as bringing an iconic store to Milton Keynes, the current owners of the Climbers Shop are returning to their own roots. They both grew up the Milton Keynes area and has been key to their own involvement in rock climbing and mountaineering.

Director Paul Casey grew up in Milton Keynes and got involved in rock climbing through school trips to the Peak District, the Lake District, Scotland, the French Alps and the Himalayas. Fellow Director Cathy Casey (Gibbins at the time) grew up in Bletchley and became involved in climbing through joining the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme while at School and the Air Training Corps. Cathy then went on to Instruct at Outdoor Centres across the UK before returning to Milton Keynes to work at the Outdoor Shop on Stony Stratford High Street. Paul, meanwhile had worked in different industries before taking up a post as Manager of the iconic Stony Stratford shop which was where they met in 1992.

We plan to make the new Climbers Shop into a real destination store for outdoor enthusiasts throughout the South East with an expert staff team on hand to share their experience and knowledge and help customers decide on the right gear to suit their individual needs. Whatever way you choose to enjoy the outdoors and at whatever level, you will find a warm knowledgeable welcome at any of our stores backed up with a huge choice of equipment and exceptionally high level of customer service before, during and after your purchase.
