The Joe Brown Shops (Est 1966) and The Climbers Shop (Est 1959)

With over 100 years of retail heritage our shops are incredibly proud to offer a huge choice of clothing and equipment for climbers, mountaineers, hillwalkers and trail runners. Our story was begun by pioneers back in the days when hemp ropes were all the rage. Today, our team are equally passionate about sharing their experience of the products we stock so you don’t have to experience the hard lessons they have already learned. Get your training plan together now and join us on a magnificent 60k trot around some of the finest scenery the Lake District has to offer.

It’s our 60th Anniversary this year and we are celebrating with not just walking and climbing events but a running event too! September the 8th will be the day of our Ambleside Trail 60 run expertly organised by local charity Brathay Trust (organisers of the ASICS Windermere marathon and other challenge events) Our staff team have chosen a trail route that starts in Ambleside taking in spectacular views among the classic Loughrigg, Tarn Hows, Langdales but also taking in the lesser known Gibson Knott and Langstrath – so beautiful that it features in the opening credits of Countryfile. The run will be flagged and supported with four checkpoints before you return to Ambleside for a well earned hot meal.

An introduction to why runners need a mobility base, before they move forward with strength work.
Runners present regularly in clinic with varied pain and injury and in many cases this could have been avoided if the individual had developed a quality mobility base. The lack of mobility at ankle, knee, hip, spine and shoulder allows for the development of an inefficient movement pattern. This then leads to altered function, the loading of other areas, muscular imbalances and the eventual pain and injury that niggles for months and can stop you running! It’s this lack of mobility and the subsequent break in the consistency of training due to the injury that can prevent you from reaching your athletic potential.
Come along and learn in a fun environment how you can identify potential problem areas. Learn simple screening techniques that allow you to identify tightness and imbalance quickly. We will introduce some simple techniques you can utilise at home to help increase mobility. We will underline why it’s necessary to have this mobility base in place before you attempt any strength work. You will learn about the performance pyramid and once this is understood you can move forward confidently into a more productive, efficient and injury free world of running.
This will be a very hands on educational and interactive fun session for all. Attend in running clothing and expect to get involved!
Adam has worked in both private practice and professional elite level sports for over 20 years. He successfully owned/managed and ran Injury and Rehab clinics in both Yorkshire and Cumbria. Adam also spent 5 years lecturing on the Sports Rehab degree at the University of Cumbria.
