Guidebooks - Cicerone - Walking the Munros: Vol1

By Steve Kew

This first volume of Cicerone’s two-part series that shows you what great walking can be had in the Scottish Munros, covers the southern, central and western highlands. With such stunning locations as Glencoe, Lochaber and Mull, undertaking the Munro challenge will take you to some of the most dramatic areas of the British Isles . This first guidebook (see the 2nd here) lays out the finest routes for tackling 139 exciting and challenging mountains. Volume 2 covers north of the Great Glen and the Cairngorms.

    Sizing Information

    Technical Information

    • Detailed route descriptions around each of the 139 Munros (all the popular routes included)
    • All routes prefaced by a wealth of information about Gaelic names, accommodation and access
    • Useful 10-figure grid refererences for key points such as summits and start point of awkward descent lines
    • Information on travel and making the most of your walks and your stay in the area

    • Hard-wearing, waterproof PVC cover
    • Part of a two-part series; Volume 2 covers the Northern Munros

    • Climbed all the Munros? Need a new challenge? Or maybe just a smaller one? Cicerone also has a set of guidebooks to The Corbetts. These are a collection of 221 Scottish mountains between 2500 and 2999ft and are available in a two volume set: Volume 1 covers the Corbetts south of the Great Glen, while Volume 2 completes the collection with the northern Corbetts.
    • Activities
    • Walking. Scrambling, exposure and other challenges depend on the difficulty of the Munro and are warned and advised on in the Guide.
    • Seasons
    • Year-round mountain walking, with summer walking in mind. However, midges may hold you back in summer, and if snow's not your thing then avoid winter.
    • Centres
    • Fort William, Glencoe, Killin, Pitlochrie, Blair Atholl, Oban and many more. Camping and through treks too.
    • Difficulty
    • Many Munros are straightforward walks, but some have exciting ridge walking and scrambling. Aonach Eagach is covered in this volume. Normal Scottish mountain challenges and precautions.
    • Must See
    • The extroardinary beauty of Scotland's mountain landscape; the challenge of a long and strenuous climb; the achievement of the summit; the sight of wilderness stretching out for miles around; the tidal wave of cloud flowing over a ridge; the sweet peace of that first refreshment at the end of the day.
