At the end of February two of our staff were offered to go on a winter skills weekend course to the Cairngorms with a local Aviemore Company G2 who are sponsored by Haglofs one of our key suppliers.
Both Richard and Bex had never done any winter walking before.
“When we arrived in Aviemore we were delighted to see snow on the mountains, apparently 3 days earlier there had been none.
On the first day after a good full Scottish breakfast, we headed up Cairngorm, and were taught skills such as ice axe arrests, I really enjoyed diving down the hill as fast as I could, then using the ice axe to stop, as well as using the ice axe to cut steps making it easier to walk on steep ice.
Later in the day we needed to put on our crampons….a strange feeling like being velcro’d to the ground. We also tested the snow to find out the avalanche risk rating, fortunately the risk was very low that day.
The following day the weather was a bit of a white out so we used the opportunity to learn some navigation skills such as taking bearings, timings and pacing.
It was a very enjoyable, informative and exhausting weekend.
I am looking forward to my days off this week as now we’ve had some good snowfall in Ambleside, I can put my new skills into practice”…by Bex from TCS - The Next Generation
So if you see Bex diving down a hill or lost in the cloud this weekend she’s just practising!
