On Wednesday I went out for the first time this winter to have a look at Helvellyn. Given a pretty dodgy forecast of very strong winds and lots of fresh snow, I decided just getting to the top was a worthwhile objective, and perhaps a look at the edges.
Navigation was tricky along the ridge from the top of Brown Cove to the col with Lower Man, then when reaching the summit the winds picked up where all ground was left exposed from the strong westerlys, so was rock solid under foot. Which cannot be said for the east facing slopes!
On went the balaclava and the goggles for the gruelling dash back down head on into the wind, with all the loose snow being picked up and blasted around. A nice introduction for hopefully a good winter to come.
