I stopped using Osprey since I bough a Black Ice but wanted something a little sleaker and smaller for all year round, plus some winter climbs etc.
My previous osprey exposure 37 was amazing and one of the best bags Ive ever had and wondered how this would live up to it. Ive used the sack twice and its above and beyond anything Id expect...its minimal and has the right amount of attachments to make it suitable for everything (overnighters, winter climbing, alpine) really looking forward to using this more and more

Recently tested Mutant in adverse winter conditions and it was a big let down as most of the buckles froze and stopped working including the hip belt and the lid buckles. I also found buckles genarally small and hard to deal with in the winter. This is a shame because it is a really nice and comfortable backpack with a lot of useful features. Looks like for now it will remain a summer pack.

Great pack. Used it to carry bivi gear for 2 nights in the Alps and stripped down for routes and it was great at both.

The Mutant is a vast improvement over the Ceres which was Ospreys original Alpine rucksack but it had far too many straps.
Like all Osprey packs it comes in different sizes so you can get a perfect fit for your body length which creates a very comfortable pack even with a heavy load. Personally once I have the pack on it is forgotten about as the weight is correctly transferred to the hips.
Everything is well thought out and the quality of workmanship and materials is excellent. My only criticism is that there is no provision to easily attach some walking poles and the fact that you can only feed the hydration tube over the left shoulder whereas I prefer it going over the right. I can live without either.
I only buy Ospey packs as they are so comfortable. I have the Mutant 38 as well as a Ceres 50 and a Stratos 24.

Good for long alpine climbs including bivis, and ok for mountaineeiring and trek too, i suggest to improve the back pannel rigidity.

Generally very impressed with the rucksack. I wanted something large enough to cope with hauling winter gear around in Scotland but able to be stripped down for alpine use. It seems well built and tough enough and includes a good set of features. Not sure about the hypalon racking loops - I find quick draws are quite tight placing and removing.
Also, the osprey hip belt tightening system (ergo pull) is very good; a small feature but works well!

Recently purchased this Rucksack (Osprey Mutant) for winter climbing in Scotland and future alpine climbing. Found it to be a great buy so far, as sits excellently on your back, even when fully loaded. Used recently on Tarmachan Ridge, which required a long walk in, as road up to Ben Lawers visitor centre closed and it felt comfortable all day.

I have to say I am vry impressed with the Mutant. It has been well thought out and Osprey have found an excellent balance between weight and durability. It is an excellent carry and very stable, just ensure you select the correct back length. The 38 litre capacity seems a little conservative if anything and I have no problem at all getting a full rack of gear, rope and spare clothes in. I have pac
