Buyers Guide - How to choose an Ice Axe

An ice axe is an essential piece of kit to carry in the winter hills and mountains. Its job is to help reduce the chance of slips and trips while crossing snow and ice, provide security on steep ground and to aid the arrest of a fall. However, it can’t do this by itself. There is no point in carrying an ice axe if you have no clue how to use one. Make sure you get proper instruction and lots of practice before relying on your skills out in the winter hills – it might just save your life.

Top tips to make the right choice:

Little rubber gizmo’s are available to protect the tips of your pick and spike from damage, or more importantly, stopping them from poking through your expensive rucksack and clothing.

Practicing how to strap your tools onto your pack while wearing gloves is time well spent.

Perfect ski touring axe, very light, Ive used it with crampons on steeps not too short at all. Id recommend you also buy a Petzl Trigrest to go with it.

Excellent for specified use - ski touring and ski mountaineering. Incredibly lightweight so you take it everywhere. The compromise is its short so on moderate gullies (30 degrees) in cane mode it feels a bit too short (Im 511) and theres no spike on the bottom so you have to work reasonably hard to make it puncture firm snow. This is doable however. Chopping steps and digging are doable but not ideal due to the short length and reduced size adze. However, all these compromises are also the Rides strengths. Short enough to fit inside your rucksack, no spike to damage interior, incredibly light (240g so you take it everywhere) and a great backup tool which will also do the job on some technical terrain. Ive been impressed by the pick and its bite into all snow types on grade 1 to 2 ground including mixed terrain. I think if youre looking for something with 5cm extra length, a better adze and a real spike (may not go inside your rucksack as easily) but you dont mind about it being 80g heavier then the Petzl Glacier Literide is a better shout. However, in this super lightweight category, compromise is necessary and the Ride suits almost all uses which a Ski-tourer/mountaineer may throw at it. Its real strength is that you will always have it in your bag.
